Israeli Lawmaker Sparks Tensions with Egypt Over Sinai Military Drills
Amit Halevi, who belongs to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, criticized Egyptian military drills near the border in a recorded statement, describing them as alarming and provocative.
He said that exercises and live-fire training announced by the Egyptian army were taking place extremely close to Israeli border communities, claiming they reflect what he described as a wider and more concerning security picture.
Halevi also alleged that Egypt is gradually undermining the long-standing peace framework between the two countries, claiming it is expanding military infrastructure and building up forces in the Sinai Peninsula.
He warned that formal agreements alone would not guarantee Israel’s security and called for changes in Israeli military deployment along the southern front, urging a stronger political and security response to what he described as potential violations.
The remarks reference the long-standing peace arrangement between Egypt and Israel established through the 1979 treaty following the Camp David Accords, which set conditions for peace, diplomatic relations, and limitations on military presence in Sinai.
Halevi further argued that Israel should take a firmer stance against what he characterized as emerging strategic threats, linking his concerns to the broader regional security environment following the events of October 2023.
