Greene County and Town of Cairo Break Ground on New Senior Center

CAIRO, N.Y. — Greene County and the Town of Cairo joined community members and local leaders Tuesday morning to break ground on a new senior center at 7485 State Route 32 in Cairo, launching a long-awaited project to expand and enhance services for seniors in Cairo and across Greene County.

Officials at the ceremony credited years of planning and partnerships for advancing the project and highlighted the investment being made in the county’s senior population.

The project will convert an existing building on the property into a senior center with space for programs, activities and congregate meals. The facility will also include a commercial kitchen planned to serve as the central meal-preparation site for Greene County’s congregate dining locations and homebound meal program.

The Town of Cairo purchased the property in 2021 to establish a new senior center. Greene County created a capital project in 2024 to support the redevelopment and move it into construction.

“This is an important investment in our senior community,” said Greene County Legislator Harry Lennon. “It will also serve as a central hub for our homebound meal program, helping make sure nutritious meals reach seniors and residents throughout the county who are unable to prepare meals or leave their homes. We’re proud to partner with the Town of Cairo to create a space that will serve residents for years to come.”

Greene County Legislator Sherry True, who also represents Cairo, echoed that sentiment. “Our seniors have waited a long time for a center that truly meets their needs,” she said. “I’m glad to see this project moving into construction.”

Greene County has committed $1.9 million to the $3.2 million project. An additional $500,000 comes from a Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology (CREST) grant secured by state Sen.Michelle Hinchey and administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY). The project is also supported by $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for the new commercial kitchen, along with a $300,000 contribution from the Town of Cairo.

“We’re excited to see this long-awaited project moving forward,” said Town of Cairo Supervisor Debra Bogins. “This new center will give our seniors a welcoming place to gather, connect and enjoy their community.”

The project also includes infrastructure work beyond the building itself: approximately 1,620 feet of municipal water and sewer lines will be extended south along State Route 32 to serve the new center.

Once complete, the new center will replace the senior center currently located on Old Route 23 in Acra. Other Greene County senior center locations will remain open, while meal preparation for the county’s congregate and homebound meal programs will be centralized at the new Cairo facility.

Tuesday’s groundbreaking marked the start of construction and a significant step toward providing Cairo-area seniors with a modern, welcoming space to gather, access services and stay connected to theircommunity.
